Killam Doctoral Scholarship

  1. The Killam Doctoral Scholarships, among the most prestigious awards at UBC, are offered through this competition. Top-ranked candidates in the Affiliated Fellowships Doctoral Program who meet additional Killam eligibility criteria may receive this scholarship as a top-up to existing funding.


Eligible Nationalities

Open to applicants of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants must:

  1. Be applying through the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS-D) competition
  2. Be planning full-time doctoral research at UBC in 2026/2027
  3. Meet all CGS-D eligibility requirements
  4. Have limited or no significant external funding (under $16,000 preferred)

Additional Funding Notes

  1. Students with significant funding (≥$16,000) for 2026/2027 are generally not prioritized
  2. 4YF holders may still be considered; affiliated awards may partially replace their 4YF funding
  3. RA/TA positions, donor-funded departmental awards, and “GSI” funding may be held in addition to this fellowship


Application Procedure

How to Apply

No separate application is required for Affiliated Fellowships. Students applying for the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS-D) will automatically be considered.

To be considered for criteria-based affiliated fellowships, applicants must:

  1. Review the list of criteria-based affiliated awards
  2. Indicate relevant award numbers in the CGS-D application
  3. Submit the criteria-based awards checklist to their UBC graduate program by the deadline

Nomination & Adjudication

  1. Graduate programs review, rank, and nominate top applicants
  2. Nominations must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by October 7, 2025, at 4:00 PM PT
  3. Awards are adjudicated through UBC's Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral competition process
