Benefits

Value and Duration

RSS and RRSS recipients in 2025 will receive the following benefits:

  1. Stipend: A tax-exempt annual stipend of $35,886 (pro-rated for part-time study), subject to annual indexation.
  2. Tuition:
  • International students: An RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS) or RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS).
  • Domestic students: An RTP Fee Offset Scholarship covering full tuition fees for the maximum candidature period.
  • Relocation: A one-off relocation allowance of up to $1,540 to cover moving expenses for the recipient, partner, and children.
  • Leave: Paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave (subject to scholarship terms and conditions).

Scholarship Duration:

  • Doctoral: A standard duration of three and a half years full-time study.
  • Master's: A fixed duration of two years full-time study with no extensions.

Note: The scholarship period may be reduced for candidates with prior research study at the same level.

Eligibility Criteria

Scholarships are awarded competitively based on academic merit, research potential, and relevant experience. Priority is given to applicants who:

  • Achieve excellence: Demonstrate exceptional academic performance, with a high distinction (80% or above) in recent studies or equivalent qualifications.
  • Commit to research: Can dedicate at least 12 months full-time (or equivalent) to the scholarship and have not completed a higher-level research degree.
  • Meet RMIT requirements: Are enrolled or will be enrolled at an RMIT Australian campus and meet English language proficiency standards.
  • Comply with scholarship rules: Have not held a Commonwealth-funded or RMIT research scholarship previously, unless terminated early. Also, are not receiving another award exceeding 75% of the scholarship value.

Specific Eligibility Criteria

  • Part-time study: Possible for domestic applicants under exceptional circumstances, as outlined in the Research Scholarship Terms and Conditions. Note: Part-time scholarships are not tax-exempt.
  • Current students and transfers: Must have at least 24 months remaining for a PhD or 12 months for a Master's by Research.
  • Ineligibility for stipend: Applicants with a Research Doctorate or equivalent are not eligible for Master's by Research stipends. Similarly, those with a Research Doctorate or equivalent are ineligible for Doctoral stipends.
