Project Overview: "2nd Life Metal Components"

This €13 million-funded project by the Werner Siemens Foundation focuses on developing advanced upcycling techniques for metal parts. The initiative aims to reduce energy consumption by up to 90% compared to conventional recycling methods while improving the functionality of recycled metal components.

The project offers a platform for creative scientific freedom, interdisciplinary collaboration, and high-impact research on sustainable manufacturing.

Job Description and Responsibilities

As a Research Associate, you will contribute to pioneering work in sustainable materials science with a focus on:

  1. Developing non-destructive methods for characterizing materials and components
  2. Classifying first-life metal components for reuse and upcycling
  3. Generating critical data for process and production planning
  4. Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams in process engineering, simulation, and manufacturing
  5. Publishing research results in journals and presenting at international conferences
  6. Supporting curriculum design for the new Master's program in Resource-Efficient Manufacturing and Materials (REMM)

Required Qualifications

  1. A very good to good Master’s degree in engineering sciences, ideally in material characterization, mechanics, or simulation methods
  2. Strong programming skills (Python, VBA, etc.) and experience with CAD/FEM software
  3. High motivation to innovate, learn, and work independently
  4. Proficiency in German and English (written and spoken)
  5. Experience or interest in material modeling, testing, and simulation
  6. Effective communication and collaboration skills, especially in international research teams
