This new PhD scholarship scheme will fund up to 12 talented Black postgraduate research students starting in Autumn 2024. Benefits
The 125th Anniversary Scholarships for Black British Researchers offer a comprehensive support package designed to alleviate the financial burden of pursuing a PhD. Key features of this innovative scholarship include:
- Financial Support: Awardees will receive a stipend at UKRI rates, set at £19,237 per year for the 2024/25 academic year, along with coverage of tuition fees starting at £4,786 per year. This support aims to cover tuition, living expenses, and research-related costs.
- Mentorship and Guidance: Scholarship recipients will benefit from mentorship opportunities with accomplished faculty members, providing guidance throughout their academic journey.
- Research Opportunities: Students will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources, fostering an environment for exceptional scholarly work.
- Community Building: The programme will create a supportive network of Black British researchers pursuing PhDs, encouraging collaboration and peer support.
- Research Training Support Grant: An additional £2,250 research training support grant will be provided throughout the PhD to support conference attendance, fieldwork, and other academic growth activities.

This scholarship is open to domestic students.
Eligibility Criteria
These scholarships are aimed at addressing the under-representation of talented Black or Black mixed-heritage students in academia. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Classified as 'Home' for tuition fee purposes.
- Identify as one of the following ethnic groups: Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed – White and Black Caribbean, Mixed – White and Black African, or other mixed backgrounds including Black African, Black Caribbean, or Black Other.
- Not currently enrolled in a PhD programme at the University of Birmingham.
- Applying to one of the twelve eligible PhD projects offered under this scheme.
Application Procedure
Before applying, applicants should familiarize themselves with the specific details of their chosen project and contact the lead PhD supervisor to discuss their suitability. Once ready, applications can be submitted via the university's online application portal. Key application documents include:
