Benefits
- Number of Awards: Two scholarships are available for the 2024-25 academic year.
- Award Amount: The scholarship provides a cash award of $25,000, full base (main campus) graduate tuition coverage, and individual student health insurance. Please note that this excludes the AFAT fee and any differential tuition. Recipients may not hold concurrent graduate assistant/associateships or student wage positions and cannot defer the award to the next year.
Eligible Nationalities
Domestic Doctoral Student:
The nominee must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident enrolled in a doctoral program on UArizona’s main campus. Students enrolled in UA Online, JD, MD, DVM, and Pharm-D programs are not eligible.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship, nominees must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Standing: The nominee must have a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good academic standing.
- Commitment to Diversity: The nominee should have demonstrated significant contributions to enhancing diversity and inclusion through their teaching, research, outreach, or service activities.
Application Procedure
This scholarship is awarded through a nomination process. UArizona doctoral students must be nominated by their academic unit, with one nomination permitted per doctoral program.
Application Instructions
Nominations: Nominees must be recommended by their UArizona academic unit. The Directors of Graduate Studies or Graduate Coordinators must submit the application via the online portal, including the following documentation:
- Essay: A two-page essay authored by the nominee, describing their goals, efforts, and achievements in promoting diversity and inclusion within education, higher education, and the wider community. The essay should be formatted as single-spaced, using a 12-point font and 1-inch margins all around. The nominee’s name must be on each page of the document.
- Current Curriculum Vitae: The CV should highlight the nominee’s relevant academic and professional experiences, focusing on their contributions to diversity and inclusion.
- Letter of Recommendation: A recommendation letter from a UArizona faculty member, discussing the nominee’s diversity and inclusion experience. This letter can be uploaded through the online application system or sent separately via email to Donna Treloar, Director, Graduate College Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
