UEG invites applications for the prestigious Research Fellowship 2025, offering two fellowships of €50,000 each to outstanding researchers in the field of digestive diseases. This 12-month program provides an invaluable opportunity for early-career scientists to enhance their scientific skills by working with renowned European principal investigators. The fellowship targets both basic and clinical researchers who have completed their PhD within the last five years or are in the midst of gastroenterology, hepatology, or surgery training. Eligible Nationalities
This fellowship is open to international students of all nationalities.
Eligibility Criteria
The grant is open to both basic and clinical researchers, and to both medical and non-medical graduates. At the time of application, applicants for the programme must:
- be a myUEG Associate
- be clinical or basic researchers specialised in digestive diseases according to their track record
- have completed their PhD, but no longer than five years ago or be in gastroenterology/hepatology/surgery training, or have completed it within the last five years (add two years per child for main carer, but max. 4 years)
- not holding an academic permanent position
- have significant research experience (according to their track record)
- be fluent in English
- reside in Europe, in a country bordering the Mediterranean Sea, or in a country represented by a UEG National Member Society
Based on the fulfilment of basic criteria, in 2025 at least one of the fellowships will be assigned to the top-ranked candidate from an Inclusiveness Target Country (as defined for COST Actions). Final decision remains with the Research Committee.
Application Procedure
Required Documents:
Candidates must find a host PI and submit:
- Project proposal (abstract, background, aims, methodology, reasons for choosing PI)
- CV (publications, H-index, language skills)
- Host PI's confirmation of support and resources
- Candidate's motivation letter (skills, goals, challenges)
- Agreement with UEG terms (no overhead costs)
- Letter of support from home department
- Optional: Childcare confirmation
Review
Applications are assessed by the Research Committee based on project merit, candidate potential, career impact, previous research, motivation, PI suitability, country of origin, and overall quality. Final selection is made by the committee.
Reporting
Fellows and PIs provide feedback reports. Fellows must publish results, submit to UEG Journal, present at UEG Week, participate in Young GI Lounge, give recommendations, and write reports.
