Applications are now open for the Tobe Maki Foundation Scholarship 2025–2027, a highly regarded non-repayable scholarship that supports both domestic and international undergraduate and graduate students studying in Japan. This two-year financial aid opportunity is designed to assist academically outstanding, motivated students in fields like chemistry, food science, art and design, physical education, and business administration.

Purpose of the Scholarship

The Tobe Maki Foundation, a public interest incorporated foundation based in Osaka, aims to nurture the next generation of talent by providing scholarships to students who are:

  1. Academically excellent
  2. Well-behaved and highly motivated
  3. Facing financial difficulty in paying tuition fees

Degree Level

Tobe Maki Foundation Japan Scholarship 2025–2027 (Fully Funded) is available to undertake Bachelor 11, Masters, PhD level programs at Japan Universities.

Students pursuing research in the following fields may apply:

  1. Chemical sciences
  2. Food science
  3. Art and design studies
  4. Physical education or sports science
  5. Business administration (including public management, marketing, etc.)

Benefits

Number of Scholarships

  1. Total: 60 students
  2. Japanese nationals and equivalents: Approximately 55
  3. International students: Approximately 5

Scholarship Amount and Duration

  1. Graduate students: ¥70,000/month (¥840,000/year)
  2. Undergraduate students: ¥60,000/month (¥720,000/year)
  3. Duration: April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2027 (2 years)
  4. May be extended up to 4 years (or longer for exceptional doctoral students)

Note: If you receive other scholarships exceeding ¥2,000,000 per year (non-repayable), the amount from this foundation may be halved.

Eligible Nationalities

This scholarship is open to applicants of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled in a university or graduate school in Japan between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2027
  2. Be under 30 years of age as of April 1, 2025 (exceptions possible for valid life circumstances)
  3. Be in 3rd year or above (undergraduate), or master’s/doctoral programs
  4. Conduct research aligned with the foundation's target fields
  5. Have strong academic records, be of good character, and demonstrate financial need
  6. Hold a “Student” visa status (for international applicants)
  7. Be self-financed international students (not on government scholarships)


Application Procedure

Application Timeline

  1. Online Submission Deadline: May 8, 2025 (by 23:59 JST)
  2. Postal Submission Deadline: Documents must arrive by May 12, 2025
  3. Result Announcement: Early July 2025
  4. Scholarship Start Date: April 2025

Required Documents

Applicants must submit:

  1. Scholarship application form (Word & Excel formats, in Japanese)
  2. Letter of recommendation (from university president or department head)
  3. Certificate of enrollment (April 2025 onwards)
  4. Academic transcripts (all years; with GPA)
  5. Residence certificate (without My Number)
  6. Photo data (front-facing, no hat, taken within 3 months)

Online and postal submissions are both mandatory. Originals must be mailed. Incomplete applications or format violations will not be considered.

  1. Register via the Scholarship Application Support System on the official website
  2. Upload PDF files online
  3. Mail original documents (recommendation letter, enrollment certificate, transcript, residence certificate) with your online receipt number

Obligations of Scholarship Recipients

  1. Submit:
  2. Academic transcripts each semester
  3. Annual activity reports
  4. Scholarship receipt/status reports every other month
  5. Failure to meet obligations may result in suspension or cancellation of the scholarship
  6. Optional participation in a social gathering event (scheduled August 24, 2025)
