Are you conducting research in Rome during the 2025–2026 academic year? The British School at Rome (BSR) invites early-career and established scholars to apply for its Associate Fellowships, offering formal affiliation and privileged academic access without the need for residential commitment or financial support from BSR.

These non-stipendiary, non-residential fellowships are ideal for scholars who already have external funding or institutional backing and are engaged in research focused on any aspect of the social, political, religious, and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula—from early prehistory to the modern era.

Degree Level

British School at Rome Italy Associate Fellowships 2025 is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at British School at Rome.

Successful applicants will benefit from:

  1. Formal affiliation with BSR for a flexible duration of 3 to 12 months (between late September 2025 and late September 2026)

The BSR Library and Archive

Fellows gain exclusive access to one of the most significant English-language research libraries in Rome, with over 120,000 volumes. Key subject areas include:

  1. Archaeology
  2. Art and architectural history
  3. Classical studies
  4. Italian history and culture

The Archive features rich photographic and documentary resources, including the renowned Ward-Perkins and Ashby collections, offering valuable insight into international scholarship in Italy from the late 19th century onwards.

Eligible Nationalities

This fellowship is open to applicants of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Be a British or Commonwealth citizen
  2. Hold a PhD awarded by a UK university
  3. Be an established scholar at a UK university, regardless of nationality

Additional requirements:

  1. Be based in Rome for the fellowship period
  2. Hold at least a first degree at the time of application
  3. Provide documentation of nationality or residency upon request

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on:

  1. Academic significance and feasibility of the proposed project
  2. Alignment with BSR’s resources and location
  3. Merit and academic track record of the applicant
