ACES USA Scholarships 2024 (Partial Funding up to $3500)

Description

In the ever-evolving world of journalism and content creation, the art of editing remains an essential skill that can shape narratives, clarify complex ideas, and ensure the accuracy of information. Recognizing the importance of this craft, the American Copy Editors Society (ACES) has established a series of scholarships aimed at nurturing the next generation of editors. Whether you are an aspiring editor with a passion for precision or a news enthusiast looking to hone your skills, the ACES Scholarships 2024 offer a unique opportunity to advance your career.

The Legacy Behind ACES Scholarships

The ACES Scholarships were born out of a commitment to excellence in editing, inspired by two legendary figures in the field: Merv Aubespin and Bill Walsh. Merv Aubespin, a former president of the National Association of Black Journalists, played a pivotal role in the formation of ACES in the late 1990s. His legacy is honored through the Aubespin Scholarship, which is awarded to one outstanding student each year.

Bill Walsh, a revered author, blogger, and longtime copy editor at the Washington Post, was a guiding spirit for ACES. His dedication to the craft of editing lives on through the Bill Walsh Scholarship, which is awarded to a student who demonstrates exceptional talent in editing news.

The Impact of ACES Scholarships

Since its inception in 1999, the ACES Education Fund has awarded more than 150 scholarships, helping to shape the careers of talented editors who are now making significant contributions to the field. The impact of these scholarships goes beyond the financial support; they represent a recognition of excellence and a commitment to the future of editing.

By providing opportunities for aspiring editors to develop their skills, the ACES Scholarships play a crucial role in maintaining high standards in journalism and content creation. The support these scholarships offer not only helps students financially but also opens doors to professional growth and development.

  • Aubespin Scholarship: Awarded to one student who shows outstanding potential in editing, this scholarship provides $2,500 to the winner.
  • ACES Scholarships: Four students are awarded $1,500 each. These scholarships are open to students who are dedicated to the editing of written materials in any field.
  • Bill Walsh Scholarship: This prestigious scholarship offers $3,500 to a student who excels in the editing of news, embodying the passion and skill that defined Bill Walsh’s career.

All six winners are also eligible for additional aid to attend the ACES annual in-person national conference, providing a valuable networking opportunity with industry professionals.

Eligible Nationalities

This scholarship is open to students of all nationalities..

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be enrolled college/university juniors, seniors, or graduate students at the time of the deadline.
  • They should have a strong interest in editing as a career, with a demonstrated commitment to the craft.
  • Scholarships are open to students of all nationalities, residences, and academic concentrations.
  • Previous winners, ACES Board members or administrators, and their families are not eligible to apply.

What Makes a Successful Applicant?

The ACES Scholarships are looking for students who are not just passionate about editing but who also possess strong critical thinking skills. Successful applicants are those who can make writing clear, accurate, and engaging, demonstrating a keen eye for detail and a love for language.

The Bill Walsh Scholarship specifically seeks applicants who aspire to edit news. Candidates must show a deep commitment to journalism and exhibit the talent that Bill Walsh dedicated his life to fostering.

The Selection Process

The selection of scholarship winners is a rigorous, two-step process. In December, the initial judging panel reviews the applications and selects the finalists. These finalists then participate in a timed editing test in early January, which is designed to assess their real-time editing abilities.

The results of the editing test are added to the applicants’ portfolios, and a second round of judging determines the winners. This thorough evaluation process ensures that the scholarships are awarded to the most deserving students who truly excel in the field of editing.

Application Procedure

The application window for the ACES Scholarship closes on November 15, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. ET. During this period, eligible students can apply for the scholarships by submitting the required materials through the ACES website.

Conclusion

The ACES Scholarships represent more than just financial awards; they are a testament to the importance of editing in the digital age. By honoring the legacies of Merv Aubespin and Bill Walsh, ACES continues to inspire and support the next generation of editors. If you have a passion for words and a dedication to clarity, the ACES Scholarships are your gateway to a rewarding career in editing.
